Hello!
Random thoughts of the week:
I’m in Sydney for a few days and we just recorded our first finance file guest episode which should be out in a few weeks! You can share your finance file here, and if you’re interested in coming on the podcast just let us know at the end of the form.
I’ve been loooooving binging Four Corners and Australian Stories episodes recently - there’s sooooo many episodes on YouTube.
China Southern flights are on sale (details below!!). I flew with them last year to Dubai and the experience was decent. It’s not as nice as an Emirates flight for example, but it’s still good for the price.
I made chicken caesar pizzas the other day (part of a meal kit box) and they were great! 10/10 idea, now i’m trying to think of other cool pizza ideas 👀
Gift card offer 💸
20x Flybuys points on Apple gift cards at Coles
If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your laptop for work or study, this Flybuys deal is an easy way to get extra value on something you were going to buy anyway.
🛒 How it works
Pick up Apple Gift Cards in-store at Coles between 30 July – 5 August 2025
Scan your Flybuys card at checkout (no activation required)
You’ll earn 20x points per $1 spent
Points usually show up within 4 weeks
There’s a 50,000 point cap per day, and you can grab up to 5 gift cards in one go.
💻 Example: MacBook Air 13-inch ($1,699)
Here’s what it looks like if you pay using gift cards:
4 × $400 Apple Gift Cards = $1,600
1 × $100 Apple Gift Card = $100
Total spend: $1,700
You’d gain 34,000 Flybuys points just from that purchase.
💸 What’s that worth?
💰 Around $170 off at Coles, Kmart or Target
✈️ Or convert it into 17,000 Velocity Points - enough for:
→ Return economy flight from Sydney to Melbourne ($86.66 in fees)→ One-way economy from Sydney to Hamilton Island 🏝️ ($51.61 in fees)
→ One-way business from Sydney to Melbourne ($43.33 in fees)
Dropping $1,700 on a laptop feels a lot better when you know you’re getting $170 back in value or points towards your next trip.
Travel hack 🌍
Melbourne → London Return for $1,239
If you’ve been tracking Europe flights, you’ll know that Melbourne to London return fares usually sit around $1,850-$2,200 on carriers like Qantas, Emirates, or Singapore Airlines.
We’ve spotted China Southern Airlines flights in October-November 2025 for just $1,239 return — $600-$1,000 cheaper than most full service options on the same route.
Similar fares are also available for Sydney to London between October and December 2025.
🛫 Itinerary Details
Outbound: Melbourne → Guangzhou (7h layover) → London (Gatwick)
• Departs 16 October 2025, arrives 17 October 2025
Return: London (Heathrow) → Guangzhou (3h layover) → Melbourne
• Departs 2 November 2025, arrives 4 November 2025
💡 Why this stands out
Comparative pricing:
Singapore Airlines: ~$1,950–$2,200 return (1 stop in Singapore)
Emirates: ~$2,000+ return (1 stop in Dubai)
Qantas: ~$2,200–$2,400 return (via partner connections)
Fare includes checked baggage, meals, and entertainment — matching what you’d get with other full-service carriers.
Layovers are reasonable: 7 hours outbound and 3 hours on the return (much shorter than typical budget carrier connections).
✈️ Is it worth it?
Savings: $600–$1,000 per person can go straight into your Europe spending fund.
Comfort trade off: China Southern may not match the premium experience of Singapore or Emirates, but for the price, it’s a compelling option.
Stopover perks: Guangzhou offers a 144 hour visa-free transit, which means you could turn the layover into a mini stopover if you want to break up the journey.
🧠 Things to keep in mind
Seats on these dates are limited, prices can jump quickly.
Expect a more basic cabin experience compared to newer Singapore or Emirates planes.
Cheapest fares will have stricter change/cancellation rules.
If you value loyalty points or comfort, compare what you’d gain by paying extra for a premium airline.
In case you missed it…. 🎙️
