Hello from Egypt!
If you haven’t already seen, I just spent 2 days at a cheap hotel with insanely good views of the pyramids. $64/night with buffet breakfast for two!!!
I think it was just a mix of good luck and going in with super low expectations. I’d heard a lot of negative things about Egypt and scams, so I was mentally preparing for the hotel to just have great marketing. But it turned out to be even better than expected. Low expectations might just be the ultimate money hack 😂
📍Great Pyramid Inn, Giza
After Egypt I’ve got just under a week before flying home. I’ve been weighing up a few options but I think I’ve settled on Jordan. I’ve started messaging hotels directly on WhatsApp asking about last-minute deals, and a bunch have come back with great discounts on their nicer rooms. Let me know if you’ve got any Jordan recommendations 🇯🇴
Travel deal ✈️
Catch a flight from $29
Jetstar has kicked off its Get Onboard Sale with 29,000 domestic fares starting from $29 and international fares from $129.
Some of the cheapest seats we spotted include:
Sydney ↔ Gold Coast from $29
Melbourne ↔ Sunshine Coast from $29
Brisbane ↔ Whitsunday Coast from $53
Melbourne ↔ Singapore from $129
Perth ↔ Gold Coast from $180
Sydney ↔ Tokyo from $259
The sale runs until 11:59 pm on 29 August (AEST), or until sold out. Travel dates vary by route but generally fall between September 2025 and June 2026.
💡 Why it stands out: $29 fares don’t come up often and for international trips, prices like $129 to Singapore or $259 to Tokyo are hard to beat!
Subscription reminder 🚨
When was the last time you audited your streaming services?
According to recent Westpac research, unused subscriptions are costing households an average of $600 each year, with streaming services playing a huge role.
The average person is signed up to five subscriptions at once. At today’s prices, that’s easily $700-$1,000 a year just on streaming, often for platforms you barely use that could go towards investing or topping up your emergency fund.
The biggest culprits?
Forgetting to cancel a free trial before auto renewal (38%)
Paying for subscriptions you’d forgotten about (32%)
Struggling to cancel the subscription (31%)
It’s easy to stack up Netflix, Disney+, Stan or Kayo but much harder to keep track of whether you’re actually watching them all to reap the value. In reality, most of us only use one or two regularly, while the rest quietly drain your bank account.
💡 Pro tip: Stick to one or two services at a time and rotate when there’s something new you want to watch. A quick audit could save you hundreds each year!
We’ve taken the time to work out the cost of the most popular streaming services below, including the cheapest basic subscription with ads (where available), the standard ad-free pricing, and whether they offer a discount for paying annually.

So take this as your reminder to do a quick subscription check:
If you’re an Apple user, head to App Store > your account > Subscriptions to see your active list
Scroll through your credit card or direct debit transactions for anything you’ve forgotten about
Or just use the table above to check if your streaming service still costs what you think it does
Even a 5 minute check could uncover a sneaky charge or two and put extra money back in your account 💸

Things I’m loving this week:

🎬 Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time
I’ve watched five days at memorial before (a drama based on true events) and thought that was wild, but this documentary shows a whole other side to Hurricane Katrina and the tragedy that unfolded. A terrifying warning of what might continue to happen in the future.
