Hello!

I think the easiest way to save money is to just stay very busy and not let yourself experience unnecessary luxuries, because for me personally, I never want nice things until I accidentally stumble into them and realise how nice they actually are.

I didn’t realise just how nice business class was until I tried it. I could have remained blissfully ignorant, but unfortunately I tried it and loved it πŸ˜…

The same thing happened when I purchased the $100+ Tatcha moisturiser. I had a credit at Mecca so I decided to try it out but accidentally ended up LOVING it. Now I have to actively make the choice to not buy it every month!

So life lesson/reminder of the day: it’s a lot easier to save money if you just avoid getting a taste of unnecessary luxuries until you can afford to pay for them regularly.

I was reminded of this lesson again today after spending the day in a display home (for work), and now I have to convince myself that it’s not quite the right time to build a lovely owner-occupied home.

Lifestyle creep is real 🫠

Is it worth it πŸ‘€

Earn bonus Flybuys points on Visa Gift Cards at Coles

From 24-30 September 2025, Coles is offering 1,500 bonus Flybuys points when you buy a $100 or $250 Vanilla Visa gift card in-store. This is on top of the standard 1x Flybuys point per dollar spent.

πŸ›’ How it works

  • $100 card = $5.95 fee β†’ 1,605 Flybuys points

  • $250 card = $7.50 fee β†’ 1,757 Flybuys points

  • Limit of 5 cards per Flybuys account to earn bonus points

  • This offer is in-store only

πŸ’‘ What it’s worth

If you buy 5 x $100 cards, you’ll pay $29.75 in fees but earn 8,025 Flybuys points (about $40 value).

Converting from Flybuys points (2:1), that’s roughly 3,490 Velocity Points. On its own, that won’t get you far but it’s a decent top up towards a flight (e.g. Sydney β†’ Melbourne starts from ~6,200 points).

⚠️ The catch

Compared to previous Coles Visa/Mastercard deals (often 2,000 points with similar fees), this promo is not as strong. You’re also paying a card activation fee for only a small net gain of points.

πŸ’‘ Verdict

If you already have big grocery or household purchases planned, this can be a way to squeeze a few extra points. But as a standalone hack, the return is average. Most people will be better off waiting for a better deal!

🎀 Hunting Warhead Podcast

If you liked The Children in the Pictures podcast, you might like this one too. I use the word β€œlike” tentatively because what it’s based on is horrific, but I find the police investigations into these things so intriguing. Also something I think a lot of us should be more wary of, especially if you have or are thinking about having kids.
