Helloooo

…from Perth! I feel like I’ve been following the rain around Australia this past week but I’m very grateful to finally have a few sunny days in Perth before I go back to Melbourne.

For my money win of the week, I booked a trip to Costa Rica!!! Seeing sloths (in the wild) has been on my bucket list forever. Big thank you to Qantas for increasing the points needed for rewards seats (🙄), it definitely prompted me to try and make the most of my points by booking flights all the way to Central America.

Sometimes finding rewards flights can feel like such a mission, but somehow I found return flights from Melbourne - San Jose on the dates I wanted. It ended up being 110,000 points + $488 for flights that would have cost $3500+ booking with cash.

Gift card offer 💳

2,000 bonus Flybuys points on Mastercard Gift Cards

This week at Coles, you’ll earn 2,000 bonus Flybuys points when you buy a $100 or $250 Coles Mastercard Gift Card in-store.

If you max out the offer with five $100 cards, that’s 10,000 points for just $25 in fees worth 5,000+ Velocity Points when transferred.

🚨 How it works

  • Head in store to Coles

  • Buy a $100 or $250 Coles Mastercard Gift Card

  • Scan your Flybuys card at checkout

  • No activation required - bonus points are automatic

  • Limit of five gift cards per Flybuys account

  • $5 fee on $100 card, $7 fee on $250 card

💡 Why it’s a good deal

Unlike retail gift card offers, these Mastercard gift cards work almost like cash, meaning you can use them:

  • On bills

  • At the supermarket

  • For rent (via some BPAY providers)

Here’s the breakdown:

5 × $100 cards

5 × $250 cards

Cost (gift cards)

$1,250

Fees

$25 ($5 × 5)

$35 ($7 × 5)

Total cost

✈️ Is it worth it?

If you're already planning to spend money on essentials or large bills, this is a low-effort way to earn extra points especially if you combine it with cashback offers. You’re essentially grabbing 5,000 Velocity points for $25 cash which almost covers a one-way flight from Melbourne to Sydney.

🧠 Things to keep in mind

  • There is a purchase fee ($5 or $7 depending on card size)

  • Points usually land within 4 weeks

  • Make sure to scan your Flybuys card at checkout

  • Not all online merchants accept prepaid Mastercards

Bonus point offer 💸

Up to 20% bonus Velocity Points when transferring Amex Membership Rewards

If you’ve built up a stash of Amex Membership Rewards points, this could be a good time to move them across to Velocity.

Until 14 August 2025, you'll receive a 15-20% bonus when you transfer your Amex points to Velocity Frequent Flyer.

🛒 How it works

  • Be a member of both Amex Membership Rewards & Velocity Frequent Flyer

  • Link your Velocity number to your Amex account

  • Make sure you have an eligible Amex card

  • Transfer a minimum of 2,000 Membership Rewards points

  • Bonus Velocity Points may take up to 6 weeks to transfer

💸 What’s that worth?

  • Transfer rate is typically 2 Membership Rewards points → 1 Velocity Point

  • Bonus points will be awarded at:

    • 15% for Ascent, Gateway, New Corporate Ascent and Business Ascent

    • 20% for Premium Ascent

  • So transferring 10,000 Membership Rewards points = 5,000 base Velocity Points plus 750-1,000 bonus points
